Blocking the Blog

So after a long absence here I am again for no apparent reason. At least that what it may look like to some. However, I actually have a reason. I know, that even surprised me a bit. As to the reason it’s simply this:

The WordPress 5.0 release is out replete with the new “Block editor” that replaces the old and venerable (TinyMCE) WYSIWYG editor that has long graced WordPress in the past. Born from the somewhat infamous Gutenburg plugin, it’s guts are now a part of WordPress 5.0 and beyond.

After a few weeks of reading the WordPress.org, Gutenburg plugin forum thread, and playing around with all the new shiny buttons, switches, and gauges of the plugin itself (and generally not liking the experience) I finally decided I had to give this blockhead block editor a serious try. Not much choice since it’s now incorporated into the very heart of WordPress whether I like it or not.

Okay, I’m not really being fair when I say that since I can always install the Classic editor plugin to set things back to normal–normal being the old classic editor that I mentioned in the second paragraph…er…block…er… thing. Whatever. It’s installed and set to use the new change for change sake block editor until I become so frustrated with the thing that I want to heave my laptop out the window.

Anyway, It’s as good excuse as any for writing a new post after being gone so long.

So, I’ve been banging away at this newfangled editor without a problem but so far it’s only been text plus one link. The link was, surprisingly, just as easy to set as it was in the old editor which was a no small relief to me–nothing blew up. Highlight text, hit the “Link” button on the format bar and insert the URL. Easy as cake…er…pie.

Speaking of the now truncated format bar, it seems to follow me around like a puppy and vanish just when I want to use it. No problem as I can just whistle it back up by knocking off my keyboard mangling and moving my mouse/finger on the touch pad a bit. And I’ve been ignoring the fact that each paragraph is actually a new “block” or something. But since it looks no different than any paragraph I’ve ever written before, without any outlines appearing or alarms and bells going off when I hit the “Enter” key, I guess I’m alright with it. A slight outline does appear if I stop typing and start moving the cursor around though. Also not a problem as I can ignore that as well.

Of course, like I said before, this has all been text so far and I haven’t attempted to do something stupid like actually inserting an image. But I suppose I’ll just have to haul up my britches and forge ahead.  I can’t quite recall if the image is a block within a block or a block in it’s own right but then again, I’m easily confused these days about most stuff so no problem there either. So, with fair warning, I hereby declare that I will not be held responsible for the results.

Where's the kaboom?
